Discussion & Adventure
Sky Creek Dharma Center
SCHEDULE
12:45 pm: Those who wish to have a beverage get coffee or other drinks.
1:00 pm: The Group Guide says a few words and this person lightly manages the discussion. People sit in the living room area and those who have a topic that they have previously submitted by email start the discussion.
3:00 pm: Those who chose to participate will join a meditation circle with light chanting in the back yard area.
3:15 pm: Adjourn.
Our group was created to explore concepts and questions of a spiritual nature and to share outdoor adventures mainly in natural settings. The two founders are both members of the hiking group Chico-Go, and regular visitors to the Sky Creek Dharma Center. We believe that spiritual pursuits are in many ways parallel with enlightening experiences that can be found in nature. We wanted to bring two of our favorite activities together in one organization. Our thinking and beliefs are not exclusive to any specific doctrine, and it is our view that many religions and philosophies are connected by similar tenets such as a desire for a better world and a greater state of peace and well-being for people.
We meet for coffee and discussions twice a month. The coffee and discussion last one hour and the time is meant to facilitate a cross pollination of ideas and experiences that pertain to an increase in mental, spiritual and physical well-being. We are interested in exploring traditional methods and to consider new and innovative approaches. We will also meet, when posted, for mostly outdoor adventure activities.
DISCUSSION TOPICS
Reincarnation, Mindfulness, Manifesting, Regression Therapy, Prayer, Walking Meditation, Mantra Meditation, Breath Awareness , Stoicism, Reiki, various books concerning spiritual matters. NOTE: We also encourage people to bring forward concepts that they want to share and to offer new topic ideas whenever an individual wishes to do so.
ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES
2nd and 4th Saturday Each Month When Posted (times and places will change and we will not necessarily meet twice per month for these activities). Hiking, kayaking, meditation walks, backpacking, picnics, sailing, biking, moonlight meditation. All are welcome to join either the morning meeting at the center or afternoon outdoor events separately.
A Note from Will Otey: Further Insight into our Vision for Spirit Quest
I attend Sky Creek Dharma Center Sangha every Sunday that I can. At the beginning of the Sangha, before discussions, the group communally reads a kind of mantra about suffering. The first line is “We are here to end suffering.”
I concur with this and many people I know do as well. This planet and the human race are suffused with suffering.
Spirit Quest is intended to help, even in the smallest way, to decrease suffering (if only a tiny bit) because this is what we desire to see happen. Humans have become increasingly alienated from one another, polarized and a greater callousness has taken hold in my relatively short life.
We want people of like mind to come together so that a cross-pollination of ideas and experiences can take place. New meditative techniques and meditation practices are appearing with greater abundance than I have seen before, and we want to understand and examine some of these techniques and practices. We want to promote an environment where people can share positive experiences without an overarching structure that is either narrow in scope or anything remotely similar to authoritarian. What we seek is to facilitate ideas and activities that can help reduce suffering and promote positive and even joyful experiences shared by those who chose to participate

MATT CAVENDER
Multi practice spiritual healing practitioner.
Matt Cavender has studied and practiced Chinese martial arts for over 43 years. At the age of 12, he learned Chinese Kempo Karate to safeguard himself from bullies. It was an effective defensive system that he studied, practiced, and later taught.
In his thirties, Matt discerned that martial arts was actually about moving the circulating life force (Chi) and finding the path of least resistance. This inspired the study of Northern Shaolin Long Fist, which Matt practiced and taught for many years, witnessing the benefits in his own life and his students’ lives. Seeing the connection between well-being and martial arts, Matt focused on transferring these philosophies into skills for life.
It was at this time his greatest teacher appeared. (Sifu was a highly advanced teacher of the Middle Way and a Chi system that dated back over 5000 years, where the very roots of martial arts were born.) Matt immersed himself into these ancient principles. When Matt saw how his life transformed, Matt developed the concepts into a practice called (Chi Gong). It has a unique application of all ages, especially for people between the ages of 60 and 110.
Certificate: Black Sash Shaolin Quan Master December 18, 2005

Chuck Duran
Chuck Duran has owned and operated Kuk Sul Academy in Chico for the past 26 years. He is a Martial Arts Master and a Practitioner for 38 years. He has been deeply involved in understanding Chi Energy by utilizing it rigorously in his professional work and in every aspect of his daily life for many decades. He will discuss his use of the Lower Dantian (where Chi Energy originates) for his mindfulness practices.
Leigh Ann Lipscomb
I’m certified in Shamanic Energy Medicine and Resonance Repatterning, but not either of the others that you mention. I use light and bio geometry from time to time, but these are not ‘official’. Here you go:
Leigh Ann Lipscomb is a practitioner of the Resonance Repatterning technique developed by Chloe Faith Wordsworth and a graduate of the
Shamanic Energy Medicine program of Alberto Villoldo. She also has strong backgrounds in naturopathy,
Buddhism and the Emotional Freedom Technique. Since 2016, she has served energy healing clients worldwide over Zoom
and phone. She has a strong chemistry background and is fascinated by the interface between science and spirituality.
Will Otey
Will learned meditation and breathing exercises at an early age. Around 2016 he parted with his wife and endured hardship that caused him to use breathing exercises in order to find solace. After a time, he began using the Lower Dantian as a focal point of breathing practices that accelerated and enhanced his path to greater well-being. He had inadvertently stumbled onto his own mindfulness method and diligently developed the method further. He began calling this method Peace in the Temple.
Well on his road to recovery, he unfortunately fell into severe illness that debilitated him for a long period of time in relative isolation. It was here that his Peace in the Temple method became many times stronger than before.
He eventually found the Sky Creek Dharma Center where he created the Sangha, Spirit Quest. The main ethos of Spirit Quest is the cross-pollination of ideas and experience of a spiritual nature directed primarily toward the healing of body, mind and spirit.
